John Marks is something of a national treasure

This is the autobiography of John Marks, the British doctor who over the course of his medical career became deeply involved in British medical politics and eventually rose to become chairman of council of the British Medical Association. As demonstrated by the sub-title, Britain's National Health Service, which started on the very same day Marks was licensed to practice, is almost as important a character in the book as Marks himself.
