H.E. Bates - Herbert Ernest Bates, who published under the pen name HE Bates, lived from 1905 to 1974. A prolific writer, he is best known today for his short stories and his novels 'My Uncle Silas', 'Fair Stood the Wind for France' and 'The Darling Buds of May'.
